New 1000BH handrail is approved by N.Y. State Office of Mental Health, and is awarded 2019 Nightingale Award
MILWAUKEE – Inpro has launched its new 1000BH Ligature-Resistant Handrail, and it is currently the only handrail to receive approval from the New York State Office of Mental Health (NYSOMH) for behavioral health applications. In addition, the new handrail just received a 2019 Nightingale Silver Award for Clinical Architectural Products.
The handrail is designed to reduce ligature points through one-piece construction mounted directly to the wall. Additionally, the integrated cover reduces opportunity for it to be pried off and used as a weapon for self-harm or against others.
The inclusion of handrails is a given in healthcare environments to enhance patient stability and mobility by reducing the risk of patient falls. However, when considering handrails, behavioral health facilities had to strike an almost hazardous balance – the risk of someone falling vs. the risk of someone using a handrail in a self-harm event. The new 1000BH model handrail fills that gap.
“We heard and responded to the spirit and intent of the Joint Commission’s call – through its “Zero Harm” campaign – to reduce self-harm and suicide incidents,” said Mark Alan, senior vice president of Product Development and Management. “This new handrail offers an innovative, durable, stylish ligature-resistant option for behavioral health facilities.”
Alan added that, “We were also pleased when the 1000BH was designated as the only handrail approved by New York State Office of Mental Health (NYSOMH).”
