Introduction
Architectural Products magazine recently ran an article by Jessica Shaw, ASID, where she applies neuro-architecture to interior design in the workplace. The concept of neuro-architecture involves purposely manipulating " … art, color, lighting, and design to positively impact mood, productivity and overall health."
We'll cover three areas where Inpro has particular expertise.
Natural light supports a good night’s sleep
Exposure to daylight enhances a human's sleep-wake cycles by harmonizing our circadian rhythm. Being well rested improves mood and productivity.
The challenges with daylighting workplaces are glare, thermal comfort, and HVAC loads. The use of solar shades allows natural light in while addressing the downsides.
Openness percentages in the fabrics also maintain exterior views, which are also beneficial in providing human linkage with nature. [More on biophilia in a moment.]
Stimulate creativity with art
Shaw points to new research showing art's impact on the brain to stimulate new neural pathways and ways of thinking. Through studies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and brain-wave scanning, researchers were able to see that:
- Pleasure centers in the brain are triggered by viewing art and images
- In addition, several other areas of the brain can be stimulated
- Brain-wave research shows that engaging with art triggers the brain's work to form meaning.
The implication of these studies is that art and imagery can play a role in greater cognitive functioning and creativity through brain stimulation.
Two-dimensional art in the workplace can take two main forms: Printed wall art in frames or non-framed, and large graphics printed on durable impact-resistant panels.
Harnessing biophilia to harmonize with Nature
In a nutshell, biophilia means: Love of living things. Biophilic design is a concept used within the design profession to increase occupant connectivity to the natural environment. The introduction of nature imagery (shown here at right) and maintaining outside views with open-fabric shades allows occupants in the built space access to the harmonic of nature.
