Renovation includes extensive use of JointMaster® Expansion Joint Systems.

The Project

Owensboro Medical Health Center, Owensboro Campus –
Owensboro, Kentucky.

HGA Architects designed the 780,000 square-foot, 9-story tall Medical Center. The 145 acre medical complex boasts a 447 bed inpatient Tower, Diagnostics and Treatment Building, Emergency Department, Women’s Center, and Heart Center.

The Challenge

Special treatment of the built environment was the driving factor in many design decisions- the goal was to create a warm, healing environment that was welcoming to the diverse patient population.

HGA consulted with JointMaster’s Engineering team to explore expansion joint cover options. The main focus was to reduce joint systems sightlines to a bare minimum so as not to detract from the richly finished aesthetic. This was no small task considering expansion joint structural gaps started at 4” on the ground floor and incrementally increased in sizes up to 36” on the floor decks, interior walls, exterior façade and roofs. In addition to this, there was a requirement to design a 30” wide joint cover that allowed for the exterior to be skinned in a continuously glazed curtain wall system as well as a stone veneer. The hurdles included heavy material weights, matching reveal patterns and incorporating an insulation system to help reduce HVAC lifecycle costs.

The Solution

JointMaster™ met the challenge by developing seismic-capable joint covers that took on the adjacent finishes to mask their sheer size. Interior floor systems allow for incorporation of carpeting and ceramic tile. The interior walls contain recessed coverplates allowing for the mounting of drywall, so paint and wallcovering finishes continue uninterrupted. Our wide, pleated seal products were utilized heavily in the ceilings and soffits in the corridors as well. The exterior system design was a true marvel with the development and release of the JointMaster 601 Series exterior system. This allowed the architects to seamlessly incorporate façade materials into the expansion cover.

Expansion joint systems utilized on this project include our 223 Floor joints; 243 Wall covers; 601, 612 and 616 Series Exteriors; as well as Foam Seals and Fireline 520™ fire barrier systems.
